Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers
We had a wonderful Athletics Carnival last Tuesday. Thank you to Julie Goode for the wonderful job she did in organising and executing the day. Thank you to the volunteers who set up, had a role during the day and those who stayed behind to pack up. An athletics carnival is a great community event and we are grateful for all who came along to support their children. I was particularly impressed with the sportsmanship of the children in wishing one another luck and their positive attitude throughout the day. Thank you.
Our Lady of Good Counsel School places a very high priority on the health, safety and well-being of all students attending the school. In exercising our duty of care for all students, we are fortunate to be able to offer safe, caring and affordable before and after school care through Discovery Kids which operates in the school hall. This valuable service enables the school to ensure that children with working parents who are unable to drop them off in the morning or pick them up in the afternoon, within the prescribed timeframe, are still safely cared for.

Learning Journeys
A reminder Learning Journeys are this evening from 5-6.30pm which is another event where all stakeholders in the community come to witness our children’s learning. We look forward to seeing everyone come along.
A school's duty of care arises as soon as staff become aware of a student or students being on the school premises either before or after school. The reality is that the law places a much more onerous duty of care on schools and staff than for parents and guardians. When parents and guardians drop off their child/ren at school in the morning, the school assumes the duty of care for those children throughout the day. In the afternoon when parents and guardians collect their children at home-time and exit the school grounds, they resume responsibility and duty of care for their child/ren. While any child remains on school grounds, even though a parent or guardian is in the vacinity, the staff still have a duty of care towards that child. It is for this reason that children playing after school is not allowed.
The time before and after school is very valuable for staff members used for planning and preparation time, faculty meetings, parent meetings, marking work etc. If there are children running around playing either before school or after school, our duty of care dictates that staff are legally obligated to stop their work and provide supervision of those students. This is not unique to OLGC. This duty of care and legal liability exists across all Catholic schools and indeed, all government schools as well. The school really appreciates parents and guardians understanding with regards to this matter and thanks you for your cooperation in assisting us to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
God bless you!
