Prayer

LENT 1.

Dear Lord,

O gracious Master, infuse in our hearts the spotless light of Your Divine Wisdom and open the eyes of our mind that we may understand the teachings of Your Gospel.

Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, so that having curbed all carnal desires, we may lead a spiritual life, both thinking and doing everything to please You.

For You, O Christ, our God, are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies; and to You we render glory, together with Your eternal Father, and with Your all holy, life-creating Spirit, now and ever, and forever.

Amen

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I have been visiting classrooms regularly over the past few weeks and it has been wonderful to see the great work that is being undertaken by our students. I can attest that the staff at OLGC are very committed to providing engaging and dynamic learning experiences for your children that really draw on extending their skills, knowledge and understanding as learners.

We recently had external consultant, Tanya Atherton at the school to conduct specialised assessments which were utilised to ascertain eligibility for inclusion in our new gifted and talented program, THINQERs. Tanya commented on the polite and friendly nature of our students during the testing, which is a credit to the wonderful culture we are seeking to build and foster at the school. Our staff have been seeking to embed the school’s values of respect, love, justice, and excellence across everything we do. I spoke in detail to students at last week’s student assembly, about the meaning of the school value ‘Respect’ – what does it look like at our school, what does it sounds like and most importantly, what does it feel like? If we can continue to build a focus on understanding and enacting our school values, we will be sure to foster students who are good global citizens, that will go into the world striving to make it a better place.

Innaloo / Karrinyup Parish Car Boot Sale

Please see the flyer in today’s newsletter, that provides the date and times for Fr Bernard’s Car Boot Sale initiative. It would be wonderful to have a good representation of OLGC families supporting this fundraiser, during this Lenten season.

The event provides a great opportunity for you to clear through your unwanted items, perhaps in collaboration with your kids and then come down and sell them to raise money for the communities in Turkey and Northern Territory.

Registration for the stalls can be made via the QR code in the poster below.

NAPLAN Assessments

Students in Year 3 and Year 5 will commence NAPLAN assessments next week. When discussing these assessments with your child, please place an emphasis on the fact that these tests are only a snapshot of their learning at one point in time. I often talk to students about how the assessments are designed to help teachers become better at teaching the different learning concepts to their students, rather than on individual learning results.

At the same time, as students are not familiar with sitting long assessments of this nature, I actively encourage parents to set up a supportive home routine to enable them to cope with the extra pressure they may feel during this time. Early bedtimes, a good breakfast before school and lots of positive discussion will go a long way with students.

If you have any questions regarding the NAPLAN assessment process, please speak with your child’s classroom teacher.

Pre-Kindy 2024 and Kindy 2025

A reminder to please submit your applications for Pre-Kindy 2024 and Kindy 2025 as soon as possible. The enrolment process for these years has already commenced, and places are strictly limited.

Little People....BIG FEELINGS

Big feelings are tough!  Especially when you are little. But let's be honest - being the parent on the receiving end of those big feelings can be pretty hard too. Calming our own big feelings first can be the trickiest part of helping our child find their calm but one thing is for sure, it is key to healthy emotional regulation. Did you know that developmentally, children are developing their self-regulation skills from 3 years right up to 7 years of age and they continue to fine tune these skills into adulthood? While they are working on this skill they need our help to co-regulate.

Some of the things that can get in the way of their ability to self-regulate can be remembered with the acronym HALTS. Hungry. Angry. Lonely. Tired. Stressed. Checking in to see if your child may be impacted by one or more of these factors can be a good starting point and a way to appropriately adjust your expectations around their capacity to manage big emotions.

One of my favourite sayings is ALL BEHAVIOUR IS COMMUNICATION. If you would like to explore a little more around your child's emotions, behaviours, what they may be communicating to you and ways you might respond, come and join me for the upcoming workshop attached. I look forward to seeing you then!

With Kindness, Mrs B  🐝
